Geek O’ Rotaract, any guesses on what it could be? Geek O’ Rotaract is a professional development project jointly organized by Rotaract Club of Colombo Mid Town and Rotaract club of University of Colombo, Faculty of Management & Finance to commemorate 50 years of Rotaract in Sri Lanka. The project comprises of three aspects. A quiz, Rota Tips and a video in celebration of 50 years Rotaract in Sri Lanka.
The quiz was based on Rotaract and Rotary. After testing several quiz platforms, we settled for Quizizz. The quiz consisted of three rounds, not forgetting to mention it wasn’t just a quiz but it had a twist to it. The quiz was held on 17th May 2020 with over 125 registrations from not only Sri Lanka but also from different districts such as India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. All questions were allocated a time of 20 seconds to answer, there was a catch to it; speed mattered to earn more points.
Round 01 contained 30 questions, where it was a tough round. It was interesting to watch the leaderboard where the contestants were trying their best to make their way up the leaderboard into the top 20.
A little birdy whispered to me on how they had group calls to discuss and answer the quiz, however funnily the quiz settings were adjusted for each contestant to receive a different question each time. Rota- Holics attempt to cheat turned into a fun filed fellowship.
The top 20 contestants qualified into round 02 consisting of 25 questions. The Rota- Holics sure did ‘bring it on’. It was an intense battle among the top 20 as speed was another tip in order to gain more points.
Final round had a twist to it. Apart from the quiz which was 20 questions, it featured two challenges.
First challenge: top 5 scorers had to post a 1-2 mins video on their personal Facebook profiles highlighting their experience in Rotaract and their thoughts on the 50 year long journey of Rotaract Sri Lanka. With another twist reactions on Facebook was also given marks where each react was awarded 10 points and 20 points for a share.
Second challenge: Second challenge was even more interesting and the contestants had to put their thinking cap on to battle in this challenge. The top 05 contestants were required to pitch community service project idea to a panel of judges. This final round was done via Zoom and was live streamed on Facebook pages of Mid Town and FMF. Assistant District Rotaract Representative Rtr. Nethmini Medawala and Rtr. Mayukha Abyeratne joined as the panel of judges.
Without a doubt our very own DRR Rtr. PP Krishan Balaji were in the top 05 competing for the title of the ultimate Geek O’ Rotaract. Amongst him was Rtr. Ranga Samarakoon from Rotaract Club of Kelaniya, Rtr. Danica Harding and Rtr. Nimesha Jayamanne from Rotaract Club of Colombo West and lastly Rtr. Mano Mudukotuwa from Rotaract Club of Colombo Central.
The final calculation of points gained from both challenges and the quiz determined the ultimate champion of Geek O’ Rotaract. Rtr. Nimesha Jayammane emerged as the ultimate Geek O’ Rotaract and won a yummy pizza. I’m sure she enjoyed it as it was all during the lockdown period.
As an appreciation and recognition an e- certificate was emailed to all participants.
As the second aspect of the project in order to provide a better understanding and effectively educate while also brush up their knowledge regards to Rotaract and Rotary. 20 posts containing of Rotaract and Rotary facts which was branded as ‘Rota Tips’ were posted on social media platforms of by Rotaract Club of Colombo Mid Town and Rotaract club of University of Colombo, Faculty of Management & Finance for a wider reach.
