Hey Qizaah,

Sorry to interrupt your GTA Vice City game, but this is kind of important. And besides, you are not going to go past the Helicopter Mission anyways!

Look, it’s your future self-6 years in the future, to be exact. I’m writing this while quarantined at home, because some guy in China decided to eat a bat. Yes, A BAT! Which lead to the spreading of a virus affecting the whole world. Don’t ask why; to be isolated at home with no school work and a PC full of games, is not as cool as you think. In fact, most of the world is not as cool as you think, but you’ll discover this eventually.

I have some things I want to say. And look, some of it may be painful to hear, but it’s for your own good. I know how much you hate to be lectured and scolded, but I’m here to help. And considering I’m you, there’s no way you can claim you know better than me. So, listen up.

First things first: trim that damn moustache. It was cool for like ten minutes in 11th grade. And champ, for God’s sake stop posting pictures on Instagram with stupid, irrelevant motivational quotes. Nothing great about it and most importantly NO ONE CARES!

  1. Every moment of every day, whether you realize it or not, you are making a decision on how to spend your time. Right now, you are choosing to read my letter to you. There are an infinite number of things you could be doing, but right now, you are choosing to be here. Maybe in a minute, you decide you need to pee. Or maybe you decide to go ahead shooting random people in Vice City. When those things happen, you are making a simple, value-laden decision: your game (or your toilet) is more valuable to you than this letter. Be certain that you take your decisions based on your values and your goals (Although you aspire to be a national cricketer playing a cricket game on PC won’t help, go practice!) and not merely temporary pleasure.
  • Learn to live in the moment because you’ll never get this time back. You’re never guaranteed tomorrow. Take care of loved ones, specially Mom, Dad and your brothers. You’ll never know when will be your last day with them.
  • Believe in yourself and try not to compare yourself to others, like who cares if he has more likes on his Instagram post than you. It’s okay to be a jack of all trades and a master of none. At most pick up every skill you want, try out almost everything (the good things only), and never be afraid to take calculated risks in life.
  • Disappointment and failure are healthy aspects of life. Address them correctly! Things won’t always turn out as you plan, and you’ll have to learn how to live with that and get stronger instead of discouraged. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, in fact make more mistakes than being right, have more failures than you have succeeded. Trust me it will only make you wiser and give you some amazing content to talk at TEDx one day.  Most importantly come rain or shine, always trust God.
  • Ice cream fixes everything. EVERYTHING!
  • Don’t worry about money and don’t be greedy for it. Managing your finances is important, but don’t let it dictate your life. Spend sensibly and always see how you can help someone in need.
  • Try and add value to the life of every person you meet. Everyone has their own problems, see if you can make them forget all about it when they are with you. Maybe, buy them Ice Cream.

Finally, wear a sunscreen, every damn day you go out for Rugby and Cricket practices, otherwise you’ll go from having tanned skinned to looking like a roasted chicken really soon.

The next 6 years are going to be wonderful. Get excited, get curious. Get ready to feel all emotions and face every challenge, because that’s what life is. And yours is a beautiful one.

Love,

Your wiser self.
