It finally happened! After months of planning, shifting dates, co-ordinating debacles, dates just popping off the calendar and mostly our wonderful president Mal prodding, the dream that began last year, “reeled into reality”.
iGenius was traditionally hosted with another club but this year Midtown was going solo and the pressure was on. From the get go there were so many issues that needed to be addressed. Starting with the dates. It’s always hardest to find a date that you know will be just right. By just right we mean it does not clash with any other important events in the district calendar.
After much deliberation (and copious amounts of what app debates) the date was finally settled to the 12th of March.
Just ask anyone planning a wedding and they will say its all about location, location, location. Beach, church, temple, hotel? At least the choices are narrow.
For iGenius the location became something that really drew out the creativity in our team members. A number of possible locations were propositioned, pursued and pandered out. It was too small, too large, too far away, no parking facilities…and each place did not seem to cut the mark. But as all deliberations go, it has to come to a consensus and the location was finally decided.
So why I am going on at length about the most boring part of any event, especially to you reader? Because the beauty in iGenius to me was not in the event itself, but in how the whole event came together.
iGenius at one stage seemed like an impossible dream. But it simply came together. Why? Because the club determined to pull this rabbit out of the hat.
The team led by Basith and Dina did something truly spectacular and the club came together to support this. I saw club members running around on that day making sure the participating teams had papers and pens, rushing to get the sounds right. Anjuna bringing his friends on board to provide entertainment to the participants, Miyuru and the technical team leading the way to the ship kept sailing despite the tiny mishaps that any project team knows are bound to happen.
I wish I could go on but this incredible team effort. Muji our DP and Zayan Jeffry (our past president and compere) were invaluable. ZJ kept the ball rolling with his anecdotes and wit.
I remember sitting at the table with Miyuru and helping out with the technical side of things and wondering how this all came together. It then struck me. Of course it had to. This is Midtown. Our club has thrived in making the best of the most difficult situations when they arise. Challenges bring out the best in each of us.
iGenius was a huge success. We had several participating teams from different clubs and institutes and more on those in another blog post. This one is a celebration of the best of what as a club we can do.
