In recent times, lack of enthusiasm of secondary school students for reading has contributed too many failures such as poor writing and limited understanding about what they are taught in class. Students should strive to imbibe good reading habits that would enable them function well in all spheres of life. Reading is the ability to induce meaning from written or write words. Therefore, reading is fundamental to 21st century students whose mission and goals are to excel in their academic pursuits and future endeavors.
Pages of Love was initiated by the Rotaract Club of Colombo Mid Town having identified the lack of access to good books at the SOS Villages libraries in Sri Lanka. We kicked off proceeding with a book collection campaign, where we were able to collect more than 1500 books which were directly donated to the head office of the SOS Village in Piliyandala. The committee decided to donate to the SOS Villages in Sri Lanka because they have 6 libraries across the island which is used by over 7500 orphans.
On the 31st of August 2018 we visited the SOS Village head office in Sri Lanka in Piliyandala. Where a beautiful evening was spent with over 150 orphans. Games and refreshments were organized by the club and the books were donated.
Following the donation, reading circles were implemented in all 6 libraries. Our team went in person to all 4 libraries and met with the librarians to further explain the concept of a ‘reading circle’.
This will create a reading culture among the children at SOS Village and will further encourage them to continue with their higher education.
Reading habits enhance individual self-confidence, moral and intellectual development. With a good reading habit, students will inevitably, attain success in their academic endeavors.
We aim to help every child in SOS Village to grow up and be a reader. Our goal is to provide children with the books that they want to pick up and read. This includes providing access to books for children who cannot afford to buy them.
