A project which was initiated with the sole objective of eradicating darkness in areas which is needed the most. We need a solution to eradicate the electricity issue in rural areas which doesn’t have the basic need to light. We couldn’t have helped a lot if we found a way to get them electricity because these are mostly families with the lowest income who couldn’t survive in a daily basis. Financial issue piling up, health concerns due to burn injuries, kids specially leaving their hope for education, for a good future in the dark. Electricity would have been a bigger burden in their lives every month. Our solution had to be cost effective, our solution had to something that we could afford to give in a larger scale. Innovation played most of the role in solving the issue. Project LightUp was born to eradicate darkness, sustain energy and help kids who wanted to study at night with the portable solar lamp.

A company called iEnergy approached us with their product which was reliable and cost effective. Most of all it was easy to use. Each was given to us for LKR 2000 since the product directly helped a community in need. Although it costs them LKR 4000 each the reputation Rotaract Colombo Mid-Town and Roataract as a movement had, they gave it for us for a cheaper price. We ordered 100 Lamps, and in to search funds for the lamp we had several fundraiser campaigns. Everyone helped. Big names like Dhanajaya J Hettiarachchi, Reyaz Jeffry (CEO Amana Takaful) and a lot of donors from all over the world, including the Rotaract Klub of Zagreb Centar from Croatia, Rotaract District 1913 also heard our call and helped us in the funding process. We were able to help 100 families in Mutur for the phase 1 of the project and 30 families in Negombo for phase two.
