Let’s Protect by The Rotaract Club of KDU

Dear Diary, This is the first entry for the ‘Pandemic Diaries’ blog series. Here’s an account of the commendable efforts of the Rotaract Club of KDU with regards to the stop the spread initiative.

The year 2020 was a catastrophic one for the entire world. People were put to the test physically, mentally, and financially, as the world was plunged into a global lockdown due to the covid-19 pandemic. Schools, hospitals, corporations, and even governments were forced to transfer their physical activities to virtual means.

Despite such dire circumstances and access to limited resources, the Rotary district of 3220 launched an initiative called ‘Stop the Spread’. This was an endeavour aimed at initiating a series of projects within the Rotary, Rotaract, and Interact movements in response to the Covid-19 pandemic within Sri Lanka. The purpose of such an initiative was to raise awareness with regards to the pandemic, while also reaching out to local communities in the various zones within the country.

With the intent of playing their part in the Rotaract movement, the Rotaract Club of Sir John Kotalawela Defence University has been highly instrumental in its approach towards the ‘Stop the Spread’ initiative. Their project “Let’s Protect”, was an initiative aimed at educating the general public, on acting responsibly in a post-pandemic context.

Phase 1

Phase 1 of the project was executed as a social media campaign. The purpose of this was to create awareness on adjusting to the ‘new normal’ way of life.

Phase 2

Phase 2 of “Let’s Protect” was conducted at the Kothalwalpura Maha Vidyalaya in Ratmalana.

Phase 3

Phase 3 was conducted at the Kandawala Maha Vidyalaya, Ratmalana. The Rotaractors of the Club conducted awareness sessions and also staged a drama on the ‘New Normal’, with the intent of better reaching out to the students present. Moreover, safety equipment donated by kind donors were handed over to the relevant authorities of the schools.

We as the Rotaract Club of Colombo Mid Town take this opportunity to appreciate this daring endeavour by the Rotaract Club of Sir John Kothalawela Defence University. The motto of “service before self” is brought to light through such an endearing act during these troubled times.

“The project LET’S PROTECT, made it a possibility for every citizen to fight against COVID 19 by laying a barrier for the spread. This initiative was to make the general public aware & also to protect the loved ones in the best possible way by adhering to the rules & being aware of the change with the New Normal. The project was an immense success all because of the collective efforts of all citizens.”
